Ich habe nichts gegen das System Artfacts, das immerhin blitzschnell erlaubt, die Karriere eines Künstlers zu verorten, denn am Ende will man eigentlich nur wissen, mit wem man es zu tun hat. So ein System funktioniert ziemlich gut, wenn es darum geht, uns die Top 100 zu liefern, die jährlich als Kunst­kompass veröffentlicht wird, damit wir uns die man­gelnde Repräsention der Frauen im Starsystem oder die geringe ethnologische Diversität klar machen können. (Bei den Bottom 100 wird die Gleichberechtigung übrigens wieder hergestellt.)
Nachdem ich die Top 50 der erfolgreichsten Künstler untersucht habe, um daraus den Erfolg an sich zu kreieren, den Average Top Artist, interessierte ich mich für die 50 Schluss­lichter … des Tages! Tja, wenn man entscheidet, sich für die Letzten der Liste zu interessieren, sollte man lieber mit Screenshots arbeiten, sonst riskiert man, sie morgens beim Frühstück nicht mehr aufzufinden.
Artfacts hat eine Datenbank aus 550.000 Künstlern (es waren 300.000, als ich die Liste angefertigt habe). Die ersten 100.000 sind geordnet. Für die verbleibenden 450.000 gilt: Kollektivgrab, oder sie sind einfach nur die zukünftig Geordneten, allez les gars, haltet euch fest, noch ein oder zwei Ausstellungen in einer Galerie, die die Mitgliedschaftsgebühren zahlt, und dann ist es soweit. Übrigens reicht es auch aus, seine eigene Galerie zu eröffnen und sich selbst in der Datenbank zu pflegen.
Ich habe schöne Erkenntnisse gewonnen, als ich die Liste erstellt habe und so gut es geht die jeweiligen Künstler ­gegoogelt habe.
Die obige Don’t-Liste, die man sich zu Herzen nehmen sollte, um Erfolg in der Kunst zu haben, führt nur solche Kriterien auf, die bei den Top 50 nicht auftauchen. Wenn ein Merkmal auch nur einmal erschien, wird es nicht zitiert: aus Oman darf man also kommen.
Wenn es darum geht, zu katalogisieren, bin ich ja an vorderster Front dabei, ich liebe es zu ordnen, zu rechnen und schwachsinnige Analogien zu machen. Wenn Artfacts nicht existieren würde, hätte ich es erfinden wollen, und dennoch oder gerade deswegen habe ich ein großes Bedürfnis, es zu kritisieren. Alles was ich allerdings versuche, ist die Werkzeuge zu benutzen, die mir zur Verfügung stehen, um mir rasche Porträts der Gesellschaft zu machen. Um daraus Modelle zu entwickeln oder nicht zu entwickeln, mit deren Hilfe man sicher sein kann, dass man sein Leben nicht verfehlt.
